What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that affects millions of Americans. It is a sleep disorder that is characterized by pauses in breathing throughout the night. These pauses in breathing can last from a few seconds to a few minutes, and they happen several times throughout the night. Sleep apnea is typically caused by an obstruction or blockage of the airway during sleep, to which the brain responds by briefly awakening to restart the breathing process. These disruptions can happen hundreds of times per night, preventing continuous sleep from occurring. Sleep apnea can also be caused by a brain abnormality wherein it does not send the proper signals to the muscles that control breathing, causing the person to stop breathing until they are awakened because of lack of air.

There are several symptoms of sleep apnea, including daytime sleepiness and getting sleepy while driving or operating heavy machinery. Other symptoms include loud snoring, headaches in the morning, waking up with a sore throat or dry mouth, and feeling irritable during the day. If your bed partner tells you that you snore loudly or make gasping sounds while sleeping, you may have sleep apnea.

NightLase

NightLase is an effective, non-surgical option for treating snoring and sleep apnea. It is also a more affordable option than surgery. NightLase is a safe and effective treatment that many patients prefer over surgery.

The treatment uses a soft-tissue laser to eliminate the blocking tissue in the airway, opening up the breathing pathways and improving airflow. Many patients see improvements as soon as the first night of treatment. While effective, some patients need additional treatments to see the full effects of the surgery.

What to Expect During and After Your Procedure?

Your soft-tissue laser treatment will be performed by one of our certified dentists in our office. The procedure itself takes less than 30 minutes to complete, and you will be awake the entire time. You may feel some sensitivity in the area treated but will be able to return to normal activities almost immediately after the procedure. Some patients experience a bit of bleeding or swelling following the procedure, but this usually resolves within a few days. Patients who undergo this treatment report little to no discomfort following their procedure.
